Porcelain Crowns can be fabricated from several different types of porcelain materials, and they are specially made and customized for each individual's case. The porcelains have different qualities, and as such, they allow us to offer different results based on our patient's requirements.
At Brisbane Prosthodontics, we most often use eMax, Lava Zirconia, and Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) crowns. Our PFM crowns are made with a high gold content rather than with base metals - which are cheap and tarnish easily. All of our crowns are made locally by talented Technicians and Ceramists here in Brisbane, and never sent overseas for fabrication. PFM restorations are a durable and proven technology, and have been the standard of care for many years. They suit most applications on molar teeth. The all-porcelain options have the benefit of being strong and long-lasting, while offering uncompromised beauty for incisors and some premolar teeth.
eMax is quite a strong porcelain that is also very life-like in its aesthetics. eMax crowns can be made in a manner that provides maximum strength (used for molars), or in a manner that favours aesthetics over strength (used for incisors)
Posterior (or molar) applications for eMax require strength, and so the crown will be made by our laboratory in a manner that favours this quality
PFM crowns are used whenever our patients request the greatest possible longevity from their crowns, but still require good aesthetics. PFMs use the fit and strength of their gold framework, to achieve excellent longevity
Zirconia is a very strong material for crowns, and it is used when maximum strength is required over high-end aesthetics. Often it is reserved for use on molars in patients who clench and grind their teeth
